This course is for black founders and leaders of grassroots charities, social enterprises and non-profits supporting African, Caribbean and Black British communities across England.
In this two-part workshop you’ll learn how to use your smartphone to:
- film and edit engaging videos on your smartphone
- tell compelling stories that attract supporters and funding
- showcase your organisation’s social impact with confidence
- create content ready to share online immediately
- get your organisation’s story picked up by the press.
Plus, you’ll put your new skills into action right-away as you’ll make a mobile video during the course.

Who is this course for?
This course is for black founders and leaders of registered charities, social enterprises and non-profit organisations that support African, Caribbean and Black British communities in England.
Is there a cost for this course?
Ordinarily, yes, but this time it’s free thanks to grant funding! You’ll only have to pay for your travel expenses and other related costs. Just complete our application form below to apply for a place.
Is this course online on in-person?
This course is delivered in-person at Mayflower Studios in Southampton City Centre. There are excellent public transport links to Mayflower Studios. Bus: Regular Bluestar and Uni-Link buses stop at or near Above Bar Street. Train: Southampton Central station is a 10-minute walk when exiting from Platform 1. Taxis are available outside the station. Coach: Southampton Coach Station is a 15-minute walk t. Taxis are available outside the station. Car: There is ample long-stay parking nearby.
How do I get to Mayflower Studios?
Mayflower Studios is located in Southampton City Centre, with excellent public transport links. Bus: Regular Bluestar and Uni-Link buses stop at or near Above Bar Street. Train: Southampton Central station is a 10-minute walk to MAST when exiting from Platform 1. Taxis are available outside the station. Coach: Southampton Coach Station is a 15-minute walk to MAST. Taxis are available outside the station. Car: MAST is a short drive from the motorway, following signs for Southampton City Centre. Use Junction 5 (Westbound) or Junction 3 (Eastbound) on the M27 or Junction 14 on the M3. There is ample long-stay parking nearby.
Do I need an iPhone or Android smartphone?
Either is perfect, and you don’t even need the latest model! Just make sure your phone’s camera works and that it has memory space, because you’ll be filming videos.
Do I need to buy any expensive equipment?
No. You’ll learn how to film and edit on your mobile phone so you won’t need to buy anything. We do ask you to download a free editing app from your app store before starting the course. Plus we have tripods that you can borrow – free of charge – if you need one!
Do I need filming or editing experience?
No. You don’t need any filming or editing experience. Complete beginners are welcome!
What is Mobile Storytelling?
Mobile Storytelling is based on the principles of mobile journalism. That’s the skill of using your mobile phone to create, film and edit videos on your mobile that tell impactful, compelling and authentic stories. Community activism and empowerment is at the heart of our training, so our training is made for organisations like yours.
Will I learn how to make videos for social media?
Yes! By learning how to film great shots (footage) and how to make great edits, your video skills will increase massively. You can use these skills to make videos for a range of social media platforms. Your content creation game will seriously up-level! Plus, in the course we cover posting on social media.
