Northam Community Centre’s Lockdown Food Distribution Service

“Lockdown has eased but sadly the negative impacts on the community are evident. Neighbourhoods are pulling together to tap into local resources to save lives. I caught up with Northam resident, Emma, and asked her how the support they are receiving in Northam different. Here is her response…” – Dr Abdoulie Sanneh, Project Leader, Northam Local Conversation [Links to Facebook page]

“I don’t think there’s any other estate that does things like this.”

Throughout lockdown, community volunteers on the Northam Estate have been distributing free food to local residents.

Here is volunteer Niasha explaining why she helps out.

Northam Local Conversation [Links to Facebook page] is now making videos to spread the word about their projects.

Addressing lockdown isolation and improving mental wellbeing through cooking

“Sadly it has been a difficult time for many of our most-vulnerable people in Northam, but innovative projects like cooking has helped massively. Young people, husbands, wives and their children have participated in these sessions. A big thank you to all the volunteers. We caught up the tutor and asked her some questions.” – Northam Local Conversation [Links to Facebook page]

COMMUNITY MEDIA AND COMMUNITY ACTIVISM, POWERED BY MOBILE

Our Version Media is equipping black and minoritised communities with digital media skills to tell and share their own, authentic stories. We teach people how to create, film and edit impactful videos using a smartphone. This is amplifying marginalised voices and helping people to shine a spotlight on their lives, communities, cultures and resilience.
