I don’t have a DSLR camera, can I still take part?
Yes of course! You don’t need a DSLR camera. We teach you how to film and edit on your smartphone. So you’ll just need your mobile – just make sure its camera works.
Do I need to buy any expensive equipment?
No. You’ll learn how to film and edit on your mobile phone so you won’t need to buy anything. We do ask you to download a free editing app from your app store before starting the course. Plus we have tripods that you can borrow – free of charge – if you need one!
Do I need filming or editing experience?
No. You don’t need any filming or editing experience. Complete beginners are welcome!
I want to learn Mobile Storytelling but I don’t have a story to tell. Can I still take part?
Yes, you can! Everyone has a story – many stories in fact. As this course is rooted in authentic, people-centred storytelling, we’ll help you to find a story and teach you how to identify and tell good stories in the future.
What is the community stories screening?
Our community stories screening takes place twice a year – in July and in October, for Black History Month. It’s an event where our mobile storytellers – people just like you – are the stars. Mobile Storytellers each make a mobile video during our training and and we share them on the big screen at MAST Mayflower Studios. It’s a chance to showcase their real-life stories and their new digital media skills! The evening starts with a Reception in the cafe bar for socialising and networking before the main event. The screening takes place in a cinema setting, with an audience of around 100 people. Click here to hear what the audience thought of our last screening event.
What is Mobile Storytelling?
Mobile Storytelling is based on the principles of mobile journalism. That’s the skill of using your mobile phone to create, film and edit videos on your mobile that tell impactful, compelling and authentic stories.
Will I learn how to make videos for social media?
Yes! By learning how to film great shots (footage) and how to make great edits, your video skills will increase massively. You can use these skills to make videos for a range of social media platforms. Your content creation game will seriously up-level! Plus, in the course we cover posting on social media.
